The ICEC Winter Workshop

The Iowa Conservation Education Coalition (ICEC) Winter Workshop will include real-world, hands on opportunities that model integrated STEM units at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. It will provide educators with tools and skills to integrate conservation topics and issues into their teaching while addressing Iowa Core standards in science and social studies and connect them with their local natural resources.  I will be held February 22-23, 2019 at Drake University. 
 
Attendees will work with educators and subject area experts to explore real-world data and associated activities that address core concepts and skills. Elementary, Middle and High School strands will focus on integrating authentic data into your curriculum/programming and connect it with outdoor learning. Activities include use of online teaching tools and data sets, outdoor field experiences, and discussions with STEM practitioners.
 
Data "Deep Dive" Topics:
Elementary (animal types, characteristics, behaviors, and habitats)
Activities include hatching eggs, schoolyard investigations, and focusing on trees.
 
Middle School (water/water quality)
Activities include urban watershed exploration, water testing, and online modeling applications.
 
High School (climate change) 
Activities and resources include online data sets and modeling applications, accessing satellite imagery, and systems thinking approaches to decision making.
